My Everest Base camp trek Experience

EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK

Everest Base Camp Trek is a famous challenging trek in KhumbuNepal.

Mount Everest photo taking during trek

Famous for its spectacular mountain peaks and the loyalty and friendliness of its inhabitants (the Sherpas), the Everest region (Khumbu) is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Nepal. While many of the routes through the mountains are arduous, there are ample places to rest and enjoy a meal along the way. Furthermore, don’t worry about getting lost. Just ask a local the way to the next village on your route, and they will direct you. Most Sherpas under the age of fifty can at least understand basic English, and many speak it fluently.
While trekking is possible in this area the whole year round, the best times to visit are from the beginning of March to mid May and from the beginning of September to mid November. The winters are very cold and snow may make it difficult to travel higher than Tengboche, and also lodges may be closed above this altitude. Summers, on the other hand, are wet, and the spectacular peaks are often lost in the clouds. April and early May is a good time to see the hedgerows and trees bursting into bloom, with Rhododendrons, in particular, adding a spectacular splash of colour to the landscape. However, dust from the plains of India during the spring routinely provide less than ideal conditions for clear mountain views. The views are much better after the summer monsoons have cleared the atmosphere of dust, but the days are shorter and cooler.
Fly to Lukla Airport from Kathmandu. There are several Airlines operating dozens of flights everyday. Among them Tara Air and Agni Air are generally considered the most reliable company plying the route. Sita Air also operates two flights every morning from Kathmandu Domestic Airport to Lukla at 7AM and 8:20AM. The flight takes around 25 minutes. During the summer rainy season, there may be substantial delays of flights, even a wait of one week is not unheard of. For the return journey, the flights leave Lukla at 7:40AM and 9AM. Helicopter Charter service is also available on demand and mostly used for rescue operation.
Alternatives are to fly to Phaplu airport, 2-3 trekking days south of Lukla, or to walk in from Jiri, which is 5-7 trekking days west of Lukla. These alternatives take more time and therefore are less popular, but are very peaceful and pleasant – and much safer than flying into Lukla.
Just after the village of Monju, there is check point for entering the Sagarmatha National Park

My Trek experience to everest base camp and kalapattar peak in 2000.
We 14 started  from chennai via train to Calcutta with most of the freinds from chennai and banglore.Me and karthikeyan now residing at Coimbatore planned for this trek long back  and was happy to be part of thie trekking group. We reached calcutta and boarded a aircraft at nte to reach kathmandu.
                                      Lukla airport
Next day we got our booking to Lukla. It was a a small aircraft of 19 and it was a very thrilling experience .The aircraft was flying above snow peaked mountains and it was a boon to watch. There is not much restictions like big aircrafts and the pilot called me and was showing Mount EVerst and various peaks. The most thrilling part of the flite was as it was approaching the Lukla airport ,the pilot called me and i was able to see i slopy red spot of rooad going steel up,He told we would be landing now.It was chilling to see how they land in tough conditions.ACtually our normal airport will be plane. But there there they put it steep up.The aircraft goes up in the slope and speeds down,It was a chilling experince.
                             our group in lukla aircarft
Lukla airport was too smal with mostly trekkers and materials of food and other essestial things aare brought from Kathmandu to Lukhla..Helicopters are also operated to bring goods. It was fun watching flites land to lukla
                         Starting our trek from Phadking
Our first day trek was to phadking. It was a normal trek with ups and down.Night was little chilly.Mostly oats and rice with dhal and chapati was avilable at nites.
Morning we started to namche,It was a long trek and i still remember we reached namche bazar at about 7pm only.It was cold .Namche bazar.amche Bazaar (also Nemche Bazaar or Namche Baza; Nepaliनाम्चे is a village and Village Development Committee (Namche) in Solukhumbu District in the Sagarmatha Zone of north-eastern Nepal. It is located within the Khumbu area at 3,440 metres (11,286 ft) (the low point that is), populating the sides of a hill. Namche is the main trading center for the Khumbu region with manyNepalese officials, a police check, post and a bank..
                  Namche bazar

Namche Bazaar is popular with trekkers in the Khumbu region, especially for altitude acclimatization, and is the gateway to the highHimalaya. The town has a number of lodgings and stores catering to the needs of visitors as well as a number of internet cafés, making it one of the few places in the region where trekkers can access the Internet..We had one day rest for acclimatization.
We woke up in the morning to see everywehre full of snow.Night it was severe snow fall in namache,It was lovely to watch all in snow.So we  started little late by 9.00 to start trek to Tengpoche.it was little steep trek and as we were approaching dengpoge we could see the view of mount everst vrery well.It was a very cold nigght and treksr we started feel the tough ness of alttitude.
Tengboche (or Thyangboche) is a village in Khumjung in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, located at 3,867 metres (12,687 ft). In the village is an important Buddhist monasteryTengboche Monastery, which is the largest gompa in the Khumbu region. The structure was built in 1923. In 1934, it was destroyed by an earthquake but subsequently rebuilt. It was destroyed again by a fire in 1989, and again rebuilt with the help of volunteers and the provision of foreign aid. Tengboche has a panoramic view of the Himalayan mountains, including the well-known peaks of TawacheEverestNuptseLhotseAma Dablam, and ThamserkuTenzing Norgay, the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hilary was born in the area in the village of Thani and was once sent to Tengboche Monastery to be a monk.
Tengboche is a midway station on the trail to the base camp for the mountain climbers of Mount Everest and other peaks of over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) elevation; all these areas form part of the entire Khumbu region up to Tibet border with an area of 1,148 square kilometres (443 sq mi) encompassing the Sagarmatha National park.[11][12][13][14] In the Khumbu region of Nepal, the monastery is strategically placed on the way to Everest base camp and thus attracts large number of tourists from all parts of the world.[15] During the spring season, hill slopes around Tengboche are covered with flowering rhododendrons.
view of Mount Everest from Tengboche

Tengboche, which is located in the hidden Khumbu valley, is surrounded by high Himalayan ranges where the climate varies from temperate to arctic, dependent on the altitude and aspect. However, the area, to some degree, is protected from the worst extreme climatic conditions due to a wall of ridges of the Himalayas that encircles the valley. It becomes a partially a rain shadow area and as a result the fury of monsoon precipitation and cold winds is reduced. The low altitude also results in less snowfall in the area. However, the winter temperatures are still in the freezing zone. During the monsoon season, the temperature is reported to be about 20 C
                                   Tengboche monastery
Next day we started out trek to Pheriche. The trek was becoming toughter and toughter in high altiitude.tWe slwoly feel problems in breathing and more cold.Pereichie is a small place to rest for a day to aclamatation. The day was spent going around little and taking photograqphs
Pheriche is a village in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. Situated at an altitude of about 4,371 m (14,340 ft),[1] above the Tsola River,[2] Pheriche is a popular stop for trekkers and climbers. It is the home of the Himalayan Rescue Association [1] which runs the hospital built in 1975 by the Japanese.[3]
Pheriche was primarily a farming village raising potatoes and buckwheat, and keeping yaks. However, now in the summer many of its men are employed by trekkers
as guides and bearers.
                                     At Pheriche Camp

AFter a rest day we started our trek to Lebuche. As altitute goes up we ttrek a day only 200meters since its very risky due to altitude sickness.Breaching will be slow and we need to walk very slow.the route was mostly narrow and rock and we need to go very carefully. The night was horrible in lebuchThere was no apetitre.Mostly we  had sleepless nights
                     Our grup at Lebuche camp(chilling)
Next morning after sleepless nights we started to goroshep. It was a very tough trek and it was diffiuclt to breath,We used to walk few steps take rest and then move slowly.Moslty in higher altitude maximum they trek 200meters up in a day.it was a short trek but very diffiuclt with narrow rocks and slowly we reached by 12 afternoon to goroshep. We were tired and most of us were totally taking rest in the bed.Even taking the socks and shoes were very tough,it took about 15 minites to do this simple talk.We had breathing problems and everysmall wof has to bedone very slowly. It was very chilling.I could find only very few people who have reached goroshep.the trek starts with about 2000 from lukla and hardly we can find 30 people reach a day in goroshep. No apetite and mostlyeveryone were feeling very tired.I Still remember I slept upto 5.00  and did not even have energy to get up.Even to get up we need to take a breath and takes time to just get up.’.Mostly none was interested to take any food.Even a jug of hot water was costing more. But taking hotwater helped us a lot.

From goroshep to kalapattar peak

Early morning I don’t know how I got up so early at  3.oo.We need to start by 4.oo for the climax to reach kalapattar peak,We all know its not going to be easy to reach there. It was so cold outside and they temperature are up to -15cdegres there.I don’t know how I got so much enthusiasm suddenly to start trek early when most of the people in the group unable to get up.

                                             snow mooutains
It started first in normal way and slowly it started to be very steep with big rocks. It went up and up and we need to climb continiosly.the place was awesome with full of snow covered mountains.Fortunately there was no rain or hail storm. The most useful food I carried are some chocklates and perk which helps with great energy. But mostly everyone had shortage and few could not have any sweets to take.I still remember Jeyaraman sir begging for sweets.I knew he could not continue the trek up to certain area and was resting. Its not at all a easy trek to kalapattar. It need s a lot of selfmotivation, courage and stamina to do it.

reaching the summit

By 7.30 amaround  we were seeing the kalapattar peak ,but we know still the final climb is going to be very steep.WEneed to walk on big black rocks and it was very tiresome.By gods grace 7 of our 14 group reached Kalapattar peak.i Still remember the great expereice and excitement

me in Kalapattar peak

when I reached the peak.It was a great moment in mylife.WE almost hugged each other who reached the peak.I did something wonderful.I had little water and electrol and I gave it to all 7 and felt good.Even when those friends meet they remember the electrol and the sweets I share to them in need,Particularly Nataraj always remembere me for giving perk when he was week.

It was awesome sight from kalapattar. We could see the mighgty Everest and thrilled seeing the highest peaks in the world.I can say in words those wonderful view of snow peaked mountains.Felt being at heaven.

Group pic after reaching summit

Then we had only a short time, because we need to directly go to lepuge for our next camp. Its not at all advisable to stay in Goroshep. The retrun treks took just 3 days to return to Lukla..As we reached Lukla there was no power and we visited a pub and danced for sometime. It was Budha poornima day.

wonderful view

Reached Kathmandu with great memeories.

OUR TREKKING EXPERIENCE IN AGASTHIYAR PEAK

my first expeirnce fromTamilnadu route 1985

I  have been treking to Agasthiyar peak trek from 1985.My first trek was throuth Tamilnadu route from papanasam upper dam.We need to cross the dam to the otherside by boat and start the trek.We have to reach first inzhikudi   and from there start to trek and we stayed there in estate and started our trek,The final day even the kannis missed the route. So with great diffiucltly we reched a open place from dense forest and it was getting dark.We could see the peak .but we were from the wrong side from the peak.So our leader pradipna told now we we have to climp from he other side of the rock to reach the peak.,First estate owner vijayavel mama started the climb. The rock was 60 -70 degree incllned and very slippery.Mama was just trying to keep the foot on the rock and there was no place for hand to grip.I was only 22 yrs that time.My first trek and was thinking if i could make it.So some how mama was helped by kannis to climb and now it was my turn.It was about 200 meter very steep and our leader pradipna told ,now naren its ur turn to climb. So i started to climb in the slipper rock, just i started to crawl in the rock.it was very steep and dangerous.Pradipa shouted and told Naren  dont look back and jsut go ahead.Just a blink i turned back a second and it was a very dangerous climb i could understand. From there i did not turn back.just concentrated my mind only to climb frong inch by inch and somehow i dont know how i reached up the peak,Totally adventorous trek.Nite it was horrible to stay in the peak.We had some fire wood and had fire to give some warmth,It was very cold in the peak and breeze was also fast.I could see the tuticorin light house from there.it was memorable nite.Morning we offered prayers for agasthiya saint  and started down from the peak.We were almost sliding down in steep rocks.we heard noices of elephants eating bamboo and all.By 8pm we reached the other side of papanasam dam and it was pitch dark. Some how by boat we went to other side of the dam and reached back home.Very adventerous trek.GAve me a lot confidence to do things in future.Life is always insecured anytime. We dont know what happens next minute.Let us take a lot of calcualted risks and enjoy the life with little pain also away from the comfort zone. These treks gives a lot of strong mind to us to face any situation in life. This was my first successful trek which helped me to go a lot of treks all over india. At present now agasthiyar koodam trek can be done throught only Kerala.

AGASTHIYAR KOODAM TREK FROM KERALA ROUTE

TREK FROM BANACAUD TO AGASTHYAR PEAK
Enterance of banacaud forest

Banacaud camp
Usually we plan for 3 days trek to AGasthiyar peak.We travel from Tuticorin which takes about 6-7hours and we get some of our freinds near thiruparapu and continue to reach before 10 nite to  banacaud forest. There we have little rest at nite,We try to start as early as 6.00 from the Banacaud and our first point is a pillayar kovil and we offer our prayers .

Pillayar kovil

The trek is up and down little. We reach our first water point within 1hrs.Normally we take a short break with some snacks and take a fast move to the 2nd water point where we dont stop and continue.

Our leader pradipna who motivates us all

crossing river

Beautiful falls

We stop at 3rd water point and we take some time to take our breakfast and loosen our shoes and feel the water in our foot.AFter a short 15 min brake we continue our trek to a grass valley and its open to sun and the trek starts litte tiring.AS we walk in the grass lands we can feel a lot of heat of son and we trek slowly through grass lands.

Agasthiya peak view from distance during trek

There are 2 uphills and its really tiresom with very little shades on the way.AS we finsih the sandy uphills we slowly reach a place where we tell it in our name "MUttu thatti" means its a steep climb gradualy and continous sleep and inside evergreen forest with shady trees. But i really love these place so naturaly steep and going gradual for about 45 minutes. It is always move normal slow but without much rest so that we can reach a junction up.Normally we have a rest in the junction and its a great relaxed feeling. We know that the Athiramali camp is near to us.

Athiramalai camp

From the junction the trek is very normal and gradullay up and down and it amost takes 30 min to reach the Athiramalai camp. Before we reach the camp we offer prayers to tree .Then we have our late lunch and relax at athiramali camp. Now actually athiramai camp is in repair and alternative temperory sheds have been put now. There is toilet and bathroom facilites..
Next day we Start out trek to agasthyar peak early by 6-7am..Carry just a bottle of water and better to take a raincoat. It is the most diffiuclt part of trek,Its about 8km.First the trek starts with up and down and we cross a  water  point. It is advisable to take water.AS we move from the waterpoint we reach bamboo forest,we need to trek with big rocks.Withi 2 hrs trek we reach a rock point where we can see athiramali camp and see agasthyar peak also.

Agasthiyar peak view from pongalam parai

From there its gradually steep and shady under bamboo. The path is very small. Then we reach the kerala-tamilnadu border point.AFter making a little climb we reach a open point  where if there is good rains we get water. Then we need to climb a little in rocks for about 30 minutes. We can get good view in this open spot.WE get network connection also in this area  and we  can talk to our closed ones.

Agasthiyar Peak

AS we move through the rocks we then reach a place called pongal  parai (name given to our group)  where we take rest and have breadfast of some fruits and bread.normally we carry jam and milkshake and with bread its really great food. Then starts the difficiult part of trek with slowly becoming steep and adventerous with mostly rocks.AS we move the path becomes steeper and steeper and its very shady. We start to feel tired.take only sip of water, dont gulp. Then we reach a rock where we take rest and we have given a name

rasna parai(our name)

General we start to tire in that and we know the trek is still going to be more adventerous as we move on,Within 15 to 30 min we reach a rock.just a view of seeing a big thread and steep rock many become panic.Every year i know i would be going to that slipper rock a open place.Mostly i crawl in the rock slowly or about 10 mintes to come up of the rock,But its advisible u can use rope or if we are confident we can walk carefully up also,But iam used to the crawling in rock. Then within short trek we teach another steep rock and ther is also a rope and again i crawl in rock continoslu not seeing the steep part from back.Just we have to push of the way which is comofrtable to us.It is not going to be easy.

climb by rope

Once the rock is climbed a little relief and we get ready for the final climb to the peak, its more steeper. As usual more crawl in rocks,i get panic when i see steep rocks, some trek very normally. Some years i get stranded even in crawling, since its a very steep climb. But all these efforts have a great end reaching the peak and just we fell in the feet our agasthya statue, its a rare blissful experince reaached peak.I cannt explain throgh words, its a heavenly feeling. Many readers may feel why these fellow having so panic in climbing in rocks why again and again is doing it.Tthat the passion towards nature and self confidence that we will reach our goal.

steep climb

steep climb in windy and rainy conditions

view from the agasthya peak top
Then we offer prayers, clean the area,it takes a long time to dispose bottles and plastic papers. As a part of the trek we do this cleaning work.Who will do this work?We all as team take time to clean the area first and start preparing for the pooja,we bring flowers, fruits and all. we start with singing songs and sloga and do pooja. We spend 2-3 hours depending upon the rush and climatic condiitons. Some time there will be heavy wind and rains and that time we cannt spend more time.

prayers in agasthya peak

Sage Agasthya

Then is the down aprt of the trek.I continue to do my crawling in rock slowly ,Its better use ropes in rocks like in rappling to come down,Its also a wonderful experince,It takes another 3-4 hours to reaach back Athiramalai  camp.WE stay in the camp and next day start to mvoe to Banacaud. It takes about 5-7hrs to reach back to banacaud,Normally final areas are Elephant belt and we need to be careful in that areas.2 Years back jsut  15 ays before our trek 2 people were killed by elephants in this belt who has tried flash on to take pics and ended in fatal death.

sliding down

In Athiramalai camp

Then we reach Banacud forest office,Then we go to the estate part, have a nice bath and start our journey back home.Hope with blessing of AGasthy still many times if there is gods grace we shall trek and get the blessings of AGasthya.AGasthya is immortal and always he guides in each part of trek in differnt forms as people who help and many more. And wishing you all with best wishes

NAREN TREKKING HOME PAGE

Trekking is an adventure of walking in mountains. Its living with nature. We come across rivers, meadows, bamboo forst, pine forest, trees, flowers, birds, animals which keeps us closer to nature.

I have been trekking for 25 years now and have been in himalayas, nilgris, agasthya, himachal, uttaranjal, utt arakand, nepal and lakakh and many more treks.
It has been a fantastic experience living with the nature. The most important part of trek is the adabtablity of body to nature changes in form of rains, snowfall, hailstorm, severe wind, very hot conditions etc. Some treks are conducted at high altitude which are very tough where oxygen level is very low.
India is place full of natural mountains and there are lot of places to trek in himalayas, nilgirs, pothigai, annamalai hills, parts ofpalakad, coorg areas, sayadris, mahrashtra, etc.
To me trekking is a spiritual journey. Its a direct communication with the almighy or god or nature.I learn a lot by going to trek.It takes minumum 2 months to prepare for a trek mentally and physically.Normally in trek the climate is changing often and we need to face tough times also. For a trek a tough mind to face any situation is always necessary. There is always a risk ,but as we learn to be possitive we go ahead.
Another important aspect i learned from trek is self descipline in terms of time, food, clothing etc.In every trek there is always a peak or some pass to be reached.Reaching a peak give us an objective and a goal to be reached. So we mentally get prepared to reach the goal which gives a lot of confidence in our life.
Above all i feel i was able to get wonderful friends in trek. For me freinds are great in life.Friends have been encouraging me a lot in my life
We have international trekking exposure in nepal where we get international trekking expereince.Treks are conducted by yhai, private organisers and its conduced in mostly in may -september depending upon the climatic conditions.
Hope many trekkers share their experiences and share their pics through their posts.

ladakh mountain cycling 2008

The Lakakh mountain cycling was organised by yhai and my reporting date is on 28th augast 2008 in leh.I reached the base camp by delhi-leh flite by 7.am.When we reported we were alloted accomodation and given instruction to take rest for 2 days since we suddenly have come from sea leavel to 12000ft and acclimatation is required. It was tough for 1st 2 days for me to adopt to the altitude change and it necessary for the body to adapt to the the breathing with lack of oxygen.

3rd day we had acclimatization walk around leh for about 15km and it was very wonderful and we were able to see the monastries, stupas and palance in leh and we clicked a lot of pics.

4th day we had our first mountain cycling practices around 17km and at start it was downhill and we were just like flying and return was so steep and we reached back the base camp slowly

5th day was our first day of expedition to bascgo, intial start was good, then we had ups and downs.but road was very good.we reached the gurudwara
